Brief Description of Research Interest :
|
My dissertation research focused on the role of Parvovirus B19 in cancers, particularly thyroid cancer. While B19 is ubiquitous and data does not suggest it is a causative agent of the cancers examined, its association with inflammatory pathways, specifically with upregulation of IL-6, such a possible bystander role for the virus in infected cells.
Currently, I am working on developing adeno-associated viral vectors for the targeting and treatment of thyroid cancers. Thyroid cancers develop from two main cell types: thyroid epithelial cells and c-cells. I am working on optimizing specific viral serotypes and promoters to target cancers derived from these cell types. The end goal is to deliver either apoptotic genes or gene capable of re-differentiating aggressive tumors to improve treatment of these cancers.
