Brief Description of Research Interest :
I am interested in sensory systems, to understand how organisms perceive the outside world and transform external inputs into internal representations of their environment.

My graduate work focused on the insect olfactory system. Olfactory receptor proteins expressed in insects sensory neurons detect volatile chemicals in the environment. My graduate research helped classify these proteins as part of a family of ion channels, contrary to the belief that they belonged to the superfamily of GPCRs like the olfactory receptors employed by mammals and nematodes. In addition, we described that insect olfactory receptors are a molecular target of the insect repellent DEET, therefore opening up new possibilities for the design of better insect repellents.

During my postdoctoral training, I plan to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the sensation of touch in mammals. While some of the molecules involved in somatosensation have been recently described, those involved in mechanotransduction are still largely unknown.

In addition to basic research, I am interested in policy and in the way science and society interact and influence each other.
