Brief Description of Research Interest :
Kidney is the major organ which regulates sodium excretion/absorption and thus prevents the progression of hypertension and kidney disease. Distal tubules in the kidney though absorb 5% of the sodium but is the major contributor of sodium homeostasis because it finely tunes the absorption/excretion. Our laboratory has shown that aging people develop hypertension and this occurs by the inability of distal tubules of kidney to regulate sodium. I am trying to investigate if over expression of klotho gene which is called as anti-aging gene (because it delays the process of aging) can prevent hypertension in aging/population. The successful completion of this project will unravel the novel pathways as to how anti-aging gene klotho play a role in blood pressure regulation in aging condition. The life of old/aged people having hypertension will significantly improve if this project is successfully completed
