Brief Description of Research Interest :

My current research focuses on investigation of distorted low symmetric phosphorous compounds. Imposed geometric distortion on the otherwise trigonal phosphorous center reduces Lewis basicity and engenders Lewis acidity on the P(III) center—thereby garners a fine balance between electrophilicity and nucleophilicity. This novel ‘biphilic’ nature of these organophosphorus compounds enables them to actively participate in the bond making and bond breaking processes by catalytic cycling of PIII–PV redox couple.

My other research interest includes understanding the extent to which steric and electronic parameters of the ligands controls the emission behavior of cyclometalated third row transition metal complexes. Highly luminescent iridium(III) and gold(III) complexes are prime candidates for phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) and biological tagging. In this regard, we have developed a method to connect 2-deoxy-D-ribose to luminescent cyclometalated Ir(III) by using ‘click’-reaction. Biological studies with KB3-1 cells suggested that these metal loaded nucleosides are transported into the cells through nucleoside transporters present in the cell membrane. I am also interested in developing new synthetic protocols that will reliably deliver useful opto-electronic materials containing metal-carbon bonds. As our initial attempt, we have developed new synthetic techniques to generate metal-carbon (metal: Ir(III) and Au(III)) s-bonds using transmetalation methodology and Pd-catalysis.
